Anthony Childs Discovered in 2020 while doing a deep dive of Brasilian music (in which I also discovered ímā de , Oblomov, Tim Bernardes and several others) and became an instant fave, like those others combining classic 70s-style MPB with modern songwriting and completely original individuality to continue evolving and redefining excellent Brasilian musics. Highly recommended. Alsor try to locate his 2011 album, "Memórias Luso /Africans" on other streaming services. Favorite track: Merece quem aceita.

Ursula's Crow Amabis sings songs which are, by turns, gruff, tender, sardonic and sad. His music feels lived which makes me want to listen more. Favorite track: Tiro.

Nostro Totally blown away by this release and simply way too short! Brazilian folk drawing on various influences as diverse as 60's psychedelia & folk with definite hints of Tom Waits throughout, albeit with very tender vocals. Whilst I cannot understand the lyrics, I feel the emotion that's conveyed throughout this stellar release. Eagerly awaiting more solo projects from Gui Amabais. Favorite track: Crepúsculo.

about

‘Tracks rich in mood and harmony, poetic songs with imaginative shifts’ THE NEW YORK TIMES

"Menino Horrível" is a beautiful, deliciously hushed ballad in which the singer's tender voice unfolds patiently over mesmerizing tendrils of electric guitar" CHICAGO READER

+++++

Celebrated Brazilian songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Amabis delivers Trabalhos Carnivoros, an opus of cinematic-folk and his attempt to join the dots between Darwinism, sex and love.

Amabis is best known for his production work - on Brazilian singer-songwriter Céu’s albums Vagarosa (2009) & Caravana Sereia Bloom (2012), and most recently Portuguese alt-pop queen Rita Redshoes’ 2014 album Life is a second of love – yet with Trabalhos Carnivoros, Amabis proves himself as a singer-songwriter on his own terms.

His acclaimed previous album Memorias Luso/Africanas featured guest vocals from Lucas Santtana, Criolo, Céu and Tulipa, yet with deeply personal subject matter on his new album Amabis had to be the one to tell these tales: “My previous album told the story of Brazil and so needed different voices, yet on Trabalhos the lyrics are based on my experiences, me, trying to make sense of my life”.

At the time of recording the album, Amabis was listening to Brazilian folk legend Dorival Caymmi, Turkish rocker Erkin Koray and Scottish troubadour Donovan and Trabalhos Carnivoros wears their influences proudly with it’s introspective, atmospheric sombre intensity, from the Arabesque-halluncinations of Consulta Mental to the Tom Waits-meets-Caetano Veloso-esque Pena Mais que Perfeita.
